At the edge of the Duchy of Eastgate lies Vesperness, a manor bordering the shadow of the cursed forest known only as The Darkness. When accusations of witchcraft and bloodshed rise against the enigmatic Baroness Carmilla, the Hussar knight Pawel is dispatched to uncover the truth.
But within Vesperness nothing is as it seems. Candles burn without warmth, mirrors are absent, silver is shunned… and portraits of Baronesses past all seem to bear the same unchanging face. As Pawel and his unlikely companion, the young soldier Vavra, delve deeper into the mystery, they find themselves entangled in a web of superstition, politics, and ancient vows that reach back further than memory.
Is Carmilla a victim of envy and fear… or the keeper of something far older, and far more dangerous, than the Duchies could even imagine?
In this second tale of the Naissus Legends, faith and reason clash beneath vaulted halls, and Pawel must decide whether judgment is to be passed by steel, by uncovering the truth, or is there something to be discovered in the whispered secrets of the Eastern Nights.
