Following the trail into the city’s shadows, he uncovers forged seals in the church’s sacred blue, torn receipts that fit together like teeth, and bracelets carved with a twelve-pointed star, one point filed away. The hunt takes him from hospices and scorched account books to the great hall, where truth must be spoken before the Duke of Lublin. There it will be decided whether the city bows to truth or to superstition—and whether a child’s first breath will be met with love or with fear.
